What RTP means — and what it does not
RTP, or return to player, is the share of all money wagered on a game that is paid back as winnings over a very large number of spins. An RTP of 96.48% means that, across millions of spins, the game returns about 96.48 units for every 100 units bet. The remaining share is the casino’s long-term edge.
RTP does not describe your session. Over 100 or 1,000 spins, actual results can be far above or far below the RTP, even in a slot labelled low-volatility. RTP is also not a “payout rate” that the game tries to reach: each spin is independent and the game does not remember previous results.
Sweet Bonanza’s RTP settings
The default RTP of Sweet Bonanza is about 96.48%; some sources list 96.51% for certain modes. Like most modern providers, Pragmatic Play also supplies casinos with reduced-RTP configurations. A casino can legally choose a version that returns several percentage points less, and the game looks exactly the same.
That difference is not trivial. On a £100 budget wagered several times over, a few percentage points of RTP change the expected cost of a session noticeably.
How to check the RTP at your casino
- Open the game in the casino (in demo or real mode).
- Press the i or menu button and scroll through the rules.
- Look for a sentence such as “The theoretical RTP of this game is …”.
- If the value is clearly below 96.48%, you are playing a reduced version.
Our where to play page tells you which RTP version we saw at each listed casino and when we checked.

Volatility: what the game says and what other sites say
Volatility describes how wins are distributed: frequent small wins, or rare large ones. The rules screen of Sweet Bonanza, which we checked in the official Pragmatic Play demo on 19 October 2026, labels the game low volatility — games that “pay out more often in smaller amounts” while keeping a chance of a big win. Sweet Bonanza Xmas, Super Scatter and Dice carry the same label; Sweet Bonanza 1000 and Sweet Rush Bonanza are labelled medium.
Many review sites, and earlier versions of this guide, call Sweet Bonanza high-volatility. There is no official scale behind those ratings: each site estimates volatility itself, usually from the high maximum win, the multiplier bombs and the experience that big wins only come in free spins. The provider’s label is the only classification published inside the game, so we use it. Pragmatic Play does not publish the hit frequency or variance behind its labels, and a label can differ between versions — check the rules screen of the version you play.
What both views agree on:
- Small base-game wins come often, but most of them return less than the stake.
- The largest wins come from the free spins with multiplier bombs, which need four or more scatters.
- A “low volatility” label does not mean low risk: you can still lose your whole session budget.
The maximum win: 21,100× the bet
The maximum win of Sweet Bonanza is capped at 21,100× the total bet in a single round. Some sources quote 21,175×; the exact cap appears in the game rules of your version. When the cap is reached, the round ends and pays that amount.
To put the cap in perspective: at a £1 stake it equals 21,100 times that stake. Reaching it requires a rare chain of big wins combined with high multiplier bombs. It is a theoretical ceiling, not a realistic target — most players will never see a win anywhere near it.
Hit frequency and bonus frequency
Two other figures are often quoted. Hit frequency is how often a spin returns any win; in Sweet Bonanza many of those wins are smaller than the stake. Bonus frequency is how often free spins trigger; it varies by configuration and is roughly doubled with Ante Bet. Neither is published in a single official number for every version, so be suspicious of sites that state them with false precision.
Comparing RTP across the Sweet Bonanza family
| Game | Default RTP | Volatility (game label) | Max win |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sweet Bonanza | about 96.48% | Low | 21,100× |
| Sweet Bonanza 1000 | 96.53% | Medium | 25,000× |
| Sweet Bonanza Xmas | about 96.48% | Low | 21,100× |
| Sweet Rush Bonanza | 96.50% | Medium | 5,000× |
All values are defaults; casinos may run lower versions. See every game in our versions overview.
What the numbers mean for your budget
A simple way to use RTP is to estimate the average cost of play. At 96.48%, every £100 wagered costs about 3.5% of that on average over the very long run. But over a single session your actual result will rarely match that average. Decide in advance how much you are willing to spend for the entertainment, and stop when it is gone. Our strategy guide shows how to plan a session.

Frequently asked questions
What is Sweet Bonanza’s RTP?
About 96.48% by default. Casinos can choose lower configurations, so check the game’s information panel.
Is Sweet Bonanza high or low volatility?
The game’s own rules label it low volatility. Many review sites call it high because the biggest wins depend on free spins and bombs; the label in the game is the official one.
What is the max win in Sweet Bonanza?
21,100× the total bet per round, as stated in the game rules.
Does a higher RTP mean I will win?
No. RTP is a long-term average over millions of spins and does not predict a session.
Why is the RTP different at another casino?
Because the provider offers several RTP configurations and each casino chooses one.
