The short answer
Since the 2021 Interstate Treaty on Gambling (GlüStV 2021), virtual slot games are allowed in Germany — but only at operators with a German licence. The official whitelist of the Joint Gambling Authority of the German States (GGL) shows which operators these are. Operators without a German licence act illegally, and players there have no protection under German law.
German rules that change the game
- Stake limits per spin: German law caps the stake per spin; the limit has been tiered by age and playing history since July 2026. Check the current limit in the casino’s game rules.
- No autoplay: every spin must be started by hand, and a minimum pause applies between spins.
- No Bonus Buy: the “Buy Free Spins” feature is not allowed.
- Deposit limit: a cross-operator deposit limit (generally €1,000 per month) is monitored through the central limit file, LUGAS.
- No parallel play: you may not play at several operators at the same time.
These rules protect players. In practice, Sweet Bonanza in Germany is a slower version with lower stakes.
How to check an operator
Open the whitelist on the GGL website and search for the operator and its domain. If it is not on the list, do not play there — even if it shows a licence from another country.
